Birthstones are gemstones associated with people born in a particular month and have different traditions and meanings in different countries and regions.
Origin and History of Birthstones
Birthstones originated from the breastplate of Aaron, the High Priest of Israel, which appears in the Old Testament book of Exodus. This breastplate was adorned with 12 different gemstones, each symbolizing one of the 12 tribes of Israel. Over time, this tradition evolved into the custom of using them as birthstones. In particular, the birthstone was officially defined by the American jewelry industry in 1912 and has evolved into its current form.
